SEA meetings held every second Wednesday of the Month
The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) has released an overview of the state’s draft plan for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA is federal legislation that replaced No Child Left Behind and requires states to develop plans that address academic standards, assessments, school accountability and assistance for struggling schools. ODE spent months gathering public input from over 15,000 Ohioans. Educators, parents, students and community members sent a clear message that they believe that too much time and attention is given to standardized testing. Unfortunately, the initial plan ODE developed is not responsive to these concerns. Disappointingly, this plan protects the status quo and fails to recommend key changes that are needed to improve Ohio’s schools and focus on the needs of students.
